Obverse description A goitered gazelle in profile facing right, positioned centrally within a beaded inner circle. The animal is rendered in fine relief, capturing the characteristic curved horns and elegant stance of the species. An outer decorative border of alternating arched and dotted motifs frames the design. The Arabic date ١٣٨٦ and Gregorian date 1966 appear at the top of the legend, flanking the Arabic inscription قطر و دبى (Qatar and Dubai) along the upper periphery.

Qatar and Dubai's monetary union was itself a stopgap — the two sheikhdoms joined the rupee zone replacement scheme after India's 1966 devaluation of the Gulf rupee made continuing that arrangement untenable. The Qatar and Dubai riyal lasted only until 1973, when Qatar went its own way following Dubai's absorption into the UAE and the introduction of separate currencies. This dirham belongs to one of the shortest-lived currency unions in Gulf history.
