| Reverse description | Central field bearing an armillary sphere, the personal emblem of King João III and a symbol of Portuguese maritime supremacy and exploration. The sphere, depicting celestial rings and equatorial bands, is rendered in low relief appropriate to the small denomination and hammered production technique. The flan is irregular and the strike uneven, as characteristic of calin coinage produced in the colonial Malaccan mint. The field surrounding the device is largely plain, with the overall design exhibiting the crude but symbolically significant style typical of Portuguese colonial issues for Southeast Asian circulation. |
