Andorra's right to strike its own coinage derives from its unusual co-princeship — a constitutional arrangement dating to 1278 that places joint sovereignty in the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state. Coins invoking papal imagery lean into the ecclesiastical half of that arrangement. Pius XII reigned from 1939 to 1958, and his pontificate remains one of the most historically debated of the twentieth century, largely centered on his conduct and public silence during the Holocaust.
The KM#465 is part of a broader Andorran commemorative series cycling through papal figures, struck in fractional silver with minimal actual circulation.
