Pope John XXIII died in 1963, and his canonization wasn't confirmed until 2014 — making this 2012 issue a beatification commemorative rather than a sainthood piece, struck two years before Francis formally declared him a saint alongside John Paul II. Andorra has issued a long series of papal portrait coins under its unique co-princeship arrangement, in which the Bishop of Urgell serves as one of two co-princes, giving the principality an unusually direct institutional tie to the Catholic Church that most secular minting programs lack.
