Issued in 1981, deep into the Iran-Iraq War that had begun the previous year, this coin commemorates the Iraqi Air Force at a moment when that branch was absorbing enormous losses against Iranian defenses. The Ba'athist government under Saddam Hussein was heavily promoting military prestige through state imagery, and commemorative coinage was one vehicle for that domestic messaging.
The nickel composition reflects Iraq's mid-war budgetary pressures — earlier Iraqi commemoratives had used silver.
