Reverse description Central field displays multiple horizontal registers of Kufic Arabic inscription, naming the Samanid amir 'Abd al-Malik II along with the Abbasid caliph's name, affirming political and religious legitimacy. The legends are contained within a single inner circle, with a further concentric marginal inscription in Kufic script occupying the outer border. The strike is characteristic of the Nishapur mint, exhibiting the bold, angular Kufic letterforms associated with late Samanid gold coinage of AH 389 (999 CE). Minor flatness at the periphery is consistent with the irregular flan produced by the hammering technique.
