The 2003 introduction of this dinar series coincided with Serbia's transitional period following the dissolution of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, during which the National Bank of Serbia assumed sole issuing authority — a function previously shared under the joint monetary framework with Montenegro. Montenegro had by then already moved informally to the euro, making the new Serbian coinage effectively a unilateral declaration of separate monetary policy years before formal independence in 2006.
