Obverse description The obverse depicts the allegorical figure of Liberty seated facing left upon a rock, her right hand supporting a Union shield inscribed with horizontal lines, and her left hand holding a pole surmounted by a Liberty cap. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery, seven to the left and six to the right. The date appears in the exergue below the seated figure. Later issues (KM#63.2) include light drapery at Liberty's elbow, distinguishing them from the earlier no-drapery variety (KM#63.1).
