| Obverse description | The obverse features a seated allegorical figure of Liberty facing left, draped in classical robes, resting upon a rock. Her right hand holds a staff surmounted by a Liberty cap, while her left arm rests upon a striped shield bearing the word LIBERTY. The design omits the ring of stars present on earlier issues. The date appears in the exergue below the figure, and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is divided between the left and right fields. |
