Obverse description Draped bust of Liberty facing right, with flowing hair tied with a ribbon, occupying the central field. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper periphery, while the date appears in the exergue below the truncation. A ring of six-pointed stars surrounds the effigy along the border: 15 stars total on the 1796 issue, with varieties of 13 or 16 stars on the 1797 issues, reflecting the number of states in the Union at the time of striking. The design, engraved by Robert Scot after a portrait attributed to Gilbert Stuart, is executed in the neoclassical style characteristic of early American coinage. The beaded border frames the entire composition.
