| Obverse description | Armored bust of a count facing right, wearing a plumed helmet, depicted in a bold hammered style characteristic of mid-16th-century German coinage. The figure is rendered in high relief with visible armor detailing on the chest and shoulders. A circular beaded inner border frames the central effigy. The surrounding legend, reading EDZ * CHR * IOH * CO * E * DO * PHR * ORI, identifies the three joint rulers: Edzard II, Christoph, and John, Counts and Lords of East Frisia and Phrygia (Orientalis). The inscription runs continuously around the field within an outer rope border. |
