Obverse description The German Federal Eagle (Bundesadler) is depicted in bold relief at the centre of the field, facing right with wings spread and talons displayed, rendered in the heraldic style standard to the Federal Republic coinage series. A fine beaded inner border encircles the design. The circular legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND runs along the upper periphery, with the Berlin Mint mark A positioned centrally below the eagle, flanked by two raised dots.

Reverse description The large numeral '1' dominates the upper centre of the field, flanked symmetrically by two sprigs of oak leaves with acorns in high relief, their branches curving outward toward the beaded inner border. Below the numeral, the denomination legend DEUTSCHE MARK is inscribed in two lines in bold block capitals occupying the central field, with the date 2001 positioned in the lower exergual area. The overall design follows the standard layout established for the Deutsche Mark 1-Mark circulation coinage.
