Obverse description The state emblem of the German Democratic Republic occupies the centre of the obverse, depicting a hammer and compass superimposed, encircled by a wreath of wheat ears bound with a ribbon in the national colours of black, red, and gold. The circular legend reading 'DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK' runs along the upper and lower periphery, separated by a raised rim. The design is rendered in low relief against a plain field.

Reverse description The large numeral '1' dominates the centre of the reverse field, flanked symmetrically on either side by stylised oak branches with acorns in low relief. The mint mark 'A', denoting the Berlin Mint, is positioned above the numeral near the upper rim.
