The Deutsche Rentenbank 1 Mark of 1948 was a stopgap instrument, issued in the western occupation zones as part of the currency reform that replaced the Reichsmark on 21 June 1948 — one of the most abrupt monetary transitions in modern European history. Each German resident received an initial allocation of 40 Deutsche Mark, with the Rentenbank small denominations handling the bulk of everyday transactions during the chaotic adjustment period.
Pick #1 is the lowest denomination in that inaugural series and circulated heavily. Heavily used examples are the rule, not the exception.
