| Obverse description | The obverse bears a large imperial monogram of Frederick I (Barbarossa) occupying the central field, composed of interlaced letters in the Carolingian monogram tradition. A circular Latin legend reading IMPERATOR surrounds the monogram, of which the visible portion RATOR and the initial letter F are legible on this specimen. The die is crudely engraved and the striking is irregular, typical of hammered Pisan coinage of the late 12th century. The flan is broad but uneven, with the legend frequently running off the edge. |
