Obverse description Central field displays the royal monogram KAR with the letters K and A ligate, surmounted by the Greek letter omega (Ω) above, all set within a beaded inner circle. The monogram references Charles I of Anjou (Carolus), ruler of the Kingdom of Sicily. The surrounding Latin legend reads + DEI GRA REX SICIL, proclaiming the king's title by the grace of God. The design is characteristic of the crude hammered billon coinage issued under Angevin rule in Sicily, with an irregular flan typical of medieval southern Italian minting practice.
