Obverse description A plain cross pattée divides the field into four quarters, each canton adorned with a stylised fleur-de-lis, emblematic of the Angevin royal house. The design is contained within a plain inner circle, beyond which a partially visible Latin legend runs along the periphery of the irregularly shaped flan. The hammered strike is characteristically uneven, resulting in flat areas and weak impressions at the margins. The overall composition reflects the Angevin denaro tradition introduced into the Kingdom of Sicily following Charles I's conquest in 1266.
