Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Alfonso I d'Este facing left, rendered in low relief in the hammered style typical of early sixteenth-century Italian coinage. The hair is depicted in short, loosely curled locks, and the portrait exhibits a naturalistic Renaissance character. A beaded inner border frames the field, with the circular Latin legend reading ALFONSVS·DVX·FERRARIE·III· distributed around the periphery, identifying the ruler as the third Duke of Ferrara.
