Obverse description Central shield bearing the arms of Lucca — a diagonal band with three roundels — set within an ornate cartouche-like surround with foliate or scroll elements. The surrounding legend reads CAROLVS IMPERATOR LIBERTAS, invoking the authority of Emperor Charles V and the traditional liberty of the Republic of Lucca. The design is rendered in the hammered style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Italian gold coinage, with a beaded border encircling the entire field.
