The decima de real denomination was born from Spain's 1848 monetary reform, which attempted to rationalize a currency system that had become genuinely chaotic after decades of constitutional crises, Carlist wars, and competing regional minting practices. Isabel II's government needed small copper coinage that could function in everyday transactions without the confusion of the older maravedí-based fractions.
Struck at the Segovia mint, which had operated since the 16th century using water-powered machinery before transitioning to steam.
