Patan, one of the three rival Malla kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley, was in terminal decline by the mid-1760s. Prithvi Narayan Shah's Gorkha forces completed their conquest of the valley in 1768-1769, making this issue — struck just three or four years before the kingdom ceased to exist — among the final coinages of an independent Patan. The "Without sword" distinction from the standard Dala Mardana Shah type is a die variety classification, not a mint error, reflecting deliberate iconographic variation common across late Malla copper and silver fractions.
