| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the crowned arms of Friesland, depicting a rampant lion within a baroque shield surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is boldly rendered in high relief, typical of hammered coinage of the late sixteenth century. The circumferential Latin legend, separated by cross stops, reads MONETA + NOVA + ORDIN + FRISIAE, identifying this as the new coinage of the States of Friesland. The legend runs clockwise around the full perimeter of the flan, with lettering in Gothic-influenced capitals characteristic of the period. |
