| Additional information |
Herman Dirk van Bronckhorst-Batenburg was one of the more opportunistic lordships operating in the fractured political climate of the Dutch Revolt. Batenburg, a small barony on the Maas, held minting rights that its lords exploited aggressively during the 1570s — issuing daalders that circulated well beyond their nominal jurisdiction precisely because the Spanish administration had lost effective monetary control over much of the northern Netherlands. This Type 9 falls within a sequence of closely related emissions scholars have separated primarily through die study, as the barony produced multiple overlapping varieties in rapid succession during these two years.
