Obverse description Struck on a large irregular square klippe flan, the obverse features a centrally placed crowned double-headed imperial eagle displayed, its wings spread, bearing on its breast an escutcheon with the arms of Groningen (horizontal bars). The eagle is rendered in the late Renaissance style typical of Dutch emergency coinage. A circular beaded border frames the central device, within which the Latin legend reads NECESSITATE and the date 4 FEB 1577, recording the precise date of necessity that prompted the emergency issue. The corners of the square flan extend well beyond the circular die area, leaving the flat silver fields exposed and undecorated.
