The Democratic Republic of Vietnam issued its first coinage in 1946, less than a year after Hồ Chí Minh declared independence in Hanoi on September 2, 1945. France refused to recognize the new state, and the First Indochina War broke out in December 1946 — meaning this coin entered circulation at almost exactly the moment the country went to war. Aluminium was the only practical option; the DRV had no meaningful access to copper or silver supplies outside French-controlled infrastructure.
The "Rebel Communist State" designation in Western references reflects Cold War-era cataloging conventions rather than any self-description by Hanoi.
