| Obverse description | Left-facing veiled effigy of Queen Victoria, the so-called 'Old Head' or 'Widow's Head' portrait modelled by Thomas Brock, depicting the aged queen wearing a small diamond coronet atop a flowing widow's veil, a pearl drop earring, and a pearl and diamond necklace with a brooch at the truncation. The deeply modelled high-relief bust dominates the field, with the engraver's initials 'T.B.' visible at the lower truncation. The surrounding legend reads VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP, separated by raised dots, running clockwise from the lower left, with a toothed border encircling the entire design. |
