Gibraltar's Crown issues have long occupied a peculiar corner of numismatic production — legally denominated British Overseas Territory coinage, struck by the Royal Mint's commercial competitors, and sold almost exclusively to collectors rather than spent. This piece was issued during the Platinum Jubilee commemorative cycle of 2022, one of hundreds of themed releases flooding the market that year following the Palace's licensing expansion in the early 2010s.
The "black gold" plating process — physical vapor deposition over copper-nickel, then selectively printed — has a working lifespan that conservators still debate. Long-term adhesion data beyond fifteen years remains thin.
