| Obverse description | Baronial crown surmounting the quartered joint arms of Blankenheim or Roucy, Stein, Bronckhorst, and Batenburg, rendered in the heraldic style typical of late sixteenth-century Low Countries coinage. The shield is centrally placed within the field, flanked by the initials of the issuing lord. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer border, separated from the central device by a beaded inner ring. |

Herman Diederik van Bronckhorst inherited Batenburg in 1573 and held it until his death in 1602, ruling one of the smaller lordships in the Guelders borderlands during the most chaotic decades of the Dutch Revolt. Minor lords in this region exercised the right to strike coin — a privilege increasingly contested by both the Spanish crown and the nascent Dutch Republic — and issues from Batenburg were frequently challenged as irregular by neighboring monetary authorities. Delmonte's attribution Fr#15 places this among a handful of gold issues from the barony, a remarkably thin output for a nearly thirty-year reign.
