Obverse description Central device of a crowned double Tudor rose — a white rose superimposed upon a red rose — flanked on either side by crowned royal initials H and K, denoting Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon, all rendered in the late Gothic hammered style. The legend, disposed in uncial lettering around the periphery of the coin, reads HENRIC' VIII' RUTILANS ROSA SINE SPIA', translating as 'Henry the Eighth, a dazzling rose without a thorn.' The crowns surmounting both the central rose and the flanking initials are of the open imperial form typical of early Tudor coinage. The overall composition is bold and heraldic, characteristic of the pre-reform Henry VIII gold coinage of the Tower mint.
