| Reverse description | A naturalistic scene depicting two humpback whales in a marine environment, the upper whale shown in a dramatic fluking pose with its broad tail lifted above the waterline, while the lower whale swims just beneath the surface, its characteristic ventral grooves finely rendered. Small fish are depicted swimming in the foreground field, adding depth to the underwater composition. Wavy lines across the central field represent the ocean surface. The legend YEAR OF THE OCEAN arcs along the upper rim, while the denomination 1 CROWN appears at the base of the design, all within a fine beaded border. |

The Isle of Man's Treasury has long used crown-sized issues as a vehicle for themed commemorative programs, and the 1998 "Year of the Ocean" release coincided with the United Nations International Year of the Ocean — a global initiative promoting marine conservation awareness that generated commemorative coinage from dozens of issuing authorities that year. The Isle of Man's participation was characteristically prolific; KM#897 is one of several distinct types struck for the program, differentiating by featured species.
