| Reverse description | A detailed depiction of a monkey clinging to and reaching along a diagonal branch, rendered in high relief against a polished field. To the right of the central design, a vertical panel bears Chinese characters reading 甲申猴年 (Year of the Monkey, Jiashen). Small stylised floral ornaments punctuate the inner border at intervals. The encircling legend YEAR OF THE MONKEY arcs across the upper portion, while the denomination 1 CROWN appears in the lower exergue. |

The Isle of Man's lunar series exploited a long-running licensing arrangement that allowed the Pobjoy Mint to produce commemorative crown-sized pieces largely for the collector export market rather than any domestic circulation need. By 2004, the annual Chinese zodiac issues had become a reliable revenue stream, with the Monkey year traditionally among the stronger sellers given the size of the overseas Chinese collector base.
KM#1238a is the silver proof variant; a cupro-nickel circulation strike was issued simultaneously under a separate catalog number.
