Additional information

The "Shot at Dawn" program of pardons, granted by the British government in 2006, acknowledged that many of the 306 British and Commonwealth soldiers executed for cowardice or desertion during WWI were likely suffering from what would now be recognized as shell shock. The pardons came after decades of campaigning, notably by the family of Private Harry Farr, shot in 1916 after refusing to return to the front line following severe psychological breakdown.

Gibraltar's involvement in WWI commemoration coinage from this period reflects the island's consistent use of British military history as a thematic franchise rather than any direct territorial connection to the events depicted.
