Additional information

The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics were overshadowed from the outset by a bribery scandal — the IOC expelled ten members after evidence emerged that Salt Lake officials had paid nearly $1 million in cash and gifts to secure the hosting vote in 1995. The Games went ahead, but under a cloud that prompted the most sweeping reform of IOC governance in the organization's history. The Isle of Man Treasury, a prolific issuer of commemorative crown-sized pieces, produced this silver strike as part of a broader Olympic series that year.
