Struck to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of Tynwald, the Isle of Man's parliament — one of the oldest continuous parliaments in the world, with its origins in the Norse assembly established by Viking settlers around 979 AD. The celebration drew unusual attention to Manx constitutional distinctiveness: the island is a Crown Dependency, not part of the United Kingdom, and Tynwald's unbroken legislative continuity was a point of deliberate political pride in the commemorative program.
