The Isle of Man has issued cat-themed coinage since 1970, when the tailless Manx cat first appeared on the reverse of the penny series. By 2016, the program had expanded well beyond the native breed into an annual parade of international breeds — the Tobacco Brown being among dozens of varieties struck across decades of collector-targeted issues. Pobjoy Mint, the primary producer of Manx commemoratives for much of this run, struck these in large enough quantities that secondary market prices rarely climb far above issue price.
