Gibraltar's commemorative crown program of the mid-2000s produced dozens of issues annually, and this VE Day piece marks the 60th anniversary of the May 1945 surrender. The Rock itself held particular strategic weight during the war — never taken despite sustained Axis pressure and Franco's quiet ambitions — making Gibraltar an issuer with at least some legitimate claim to the subject matter.
