Additional information

The 2004 date marks the 300th anniversary of Britain's capture of Gibraltar during the War of the Spanish Succession — specifically the assault of August 1–4, 1704, when Anglo-Dutch forces under Admiral George Rooke took the Rock from Spain in under three days. Spain ceded Gibraltar formally under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, and has been disputing that cession in varying degrees of diplomatic intensity ever since.
