Additional information

Issued on the centenary run-up to the Battle of the Somme, this Gibraltar crown is one of dozens of commemorative pieces the territory has produced marking WWI anniversaries — a prolific series that began well before 2016's main commemorations. The Somme itself, launched on 1 July 1916, produced approximately 57,470 British casualties on its opening day alone, still the single worst day of losses in British military history.

Gibraltar's role as a Crown dependency has made it a persistent issuer of British commemorative themes with no direct territorial connection to the events honored.
