Raleigh never actually set foot in Virginia — the colonies he sponsored between 1584 and 1590 were organized and dispatched entirely from England, where he was required to remain at court. The Roanoke venture, his most famous, ended in one of history's most debated disappearances. The Isle of Man issued numerous commemorative crowns through the 1990s under Pobjoy Mint, producing themed series at a pace that far outstripped collector demand, and secondary market premiums on copper-nickel issues from this period have remained negligible since initial release.
