Additional information

Francis Chichester completed his solo circumnavigation via the clipper route in 1967, arriving back in Plymouth to a reception that drew an estimated quarter-million spectators. The voyage, completed in nine months and one day aboard Gipsy Moth IV, earned him a knighthood administered dockside at Greenwich with the same sword Elizabeth I had used to knight Francis Drake in 1580. The commemorative Crown was first issued in cupro-nickel in 1967; this 1981 Pobjoy restrike in 9-carat gold represents a later collector issue rather than an original commemorative pressing.
