Obverse description Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, modelled by Raphael David Maklouf, wearing the George IV State Diadem, drop earrings, and a pearl necklace with a draped bust. The legend ELIZABETH II runs along the left rim and GIBRALTAR along the right, with the date 1996 below, all separated by a beaded inner border. Reverse description Two shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) depicted in detailed high relief: a large adult bird perched prominently on a rocky outcrop to the left, its scaly plumage carefully rendered, and a second bird perched on a smaller rock to the right with its tail fin raised, both set against a calm water background. The curved legend PRESERVE PLANET EARTH arcs around the upper rim, while the denomination 1 CROWN appears in the lower field. The composition is part of Gibraltar's ongoing Preserve Planet Earth conservation series.
