The Isle of Man's long-running cat crown series, launched in 1970, became one of the most commercially successful thematic programs in modern commemorative coinage — largely because the Pobjoy Mint aggressively marketed it to cat fanciers rather than traditional collectors. The Scottish Fold, distinguished by its forward-folding ears resulting from a dominant gene mutation first observed on a farm in Perthshire in 1961, was a logical inclusion by 2000, having gained full recognition from major feline registries in both the UK and US by then.
The .999 fine silver strikes in this series were produced alongside base-metal versions, with mintage figures for the silver issues typically kept modest to sustain secondary market premiums.
