The Isle of Man has issued commemorative crowns with unusual liberality since the 1970s, and this 2000 silver restrike of the 1963 Royal Visit crown belongs to that long tradition of retrospective issues. Elizabeth II visited the island in August 1963 — the first reigning monarch to do so since George VI in 1945. The original 1963 crown was itself a landmark piece for Manx numismatics, predating the island's formal adoption of decimal coinage and issued under the authority of the Tynwald, one of the oldest continuous parliaments in the world, dating to at least 979 AD.
