Obverse description Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, depicted wearing the George IV State Diadem, pearl drop earrings, and a necklace, as modelled by Raphael David Maklouf. The legend 'ELIZABETH II' arcs along the left rim, while 'ISLE OF MAN' appears in two lines to the upper right of the portrait. The date '1996' is inscribed along the lower right field, and the engraver's initials 'RDM' appear below the truncation. A beaded border frames the design.

Additional information

Issued to mark the bicentenary of Burns' death in 1796, this coin sits within a long Isle of Man tradition of licensing its crown coinage for commemorative purposes — a revenue strategy the Manx government pursued aggressively through the 1980s and 1990s via the Pobjoy Mint. Burns died at 37, almost certainly from rheumatic heart disease exacerbated by years of hard agricultural labor, and was buried in Dumfries just five days after his death on 21 July 1796.
