Additional information

Issued the year of Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, this Falkland Islands crown is one of dozens of commemorative pieces the territory produced under its royal warrant to strike collector-oriented coinage — a revenue stream that became significant after the 1982 conflict drew international attention to the islands. The Queen Mother herself had died a decade earlier, in March 2002, making this a retrospective tribute rather than a contemporary one.

The Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III in 1348, is the oldest continuously active order of chivalry in England.
