Issued to mark the Queen Mother's 80th birthday, this crown belongs to a wave of Gibraltar commemoratives produced under the authority granted by the 1969 Gibraltar constitution, which gave the territory its own coinage rights. The Queen Mother's birthday series was struck by the Pobjoy Mint, which held Gibraltar's commemorative contracts through much of this period.
