| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, pearl drop earrings, and a pearl necklace, executed in high relief against a frosted field. The portrait is the third definitive effigy of the Queen as modelled by Raphael David Maklouf, with the designer's initials RDM visible below the truncation. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left rim, while ISLE OF MAN curves along the upper right, and the date 1996 appears at the lower right. The obverse is surrounded by a fine reeded border. |

Pobjoy Mint produced this piece for the Isle of Man under a licensing arrangement that gave them unusual creative latitude — resulting in a steady stream of commemorative issues through the 1980s and 1990s that had little connection to circulating coinage. The Arthurian series was among the more ambitious of these programs, running across multiple years and denominations.
