Issued to mark the centenary of Otto Lilienthal's pioneering glider flights of 1891–1894, during which the German engineer completed over 2,000 controlled glides before a fatal crash in August 1896 near Rhinow, Germany. The Isle of Man had no particular connection to Lilienthal — the island's prolific commemorative program throughout the 1990s routinely appropriated international subjects with no local bearing.
