Obverse description Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing a diamond tiara, pearl drop earring, and pearl necklace, as designed by Raphael David Maklouf (third definitive portrait). The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left rim, while ISLE OF MAN curves along the upper right, and the date 1996 appears at the lower right. The initials RDM, referencing the engraver, are incorporated into the design near the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a smooth field.

Additional information

Part of the Isle of Man's prolific commemorative crown program of the 1990s, which the Pobjoy Mint produced in such volume and variety that the series became more a collector subscription product than a circulating currency. The Merlin issue sits in a run of Arthurian-themed crowns the IOM government licensed through that decade, capitalizing on the island's Celtic heritage claims and a reliable export market in thematic coin collecting.
