Additional information

Gibraltar's commemorative program in the 1990s was prolific to the point of exhaustion, issuing dozens of proof crowns annually on themes with little direct connection to the territory. Marco Polo's appearance here follows that pattern — the Venetian merchant's 13th-century overland journey to the court of Kublai Khan provides the subject, but the Gibraltar link is purely commercial. The Royal Mint struck many of these issues on contract.
